A neighborhood dispute outside a Detroit elementary school turned deadly Thursday evening, leaving one man dead and another in handcuffs as stunned residents watched homicide detectives swarm the scene.
Police say the killing unfolded just after 5:15 p.m. outside Chrysler Elementary School on the city’s east side, where an argument among three adults spiraled from words to a physical fight and finally to gunfire. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and his name has not yet been released. Media questions about the case are being routed through the Detroit Public Schools Community District, according to ClickOnDetroit.
Suspect taken into custody and firearm recovered
Detroit police from the 7th Precinct responded to the disturbance and quickly took a suspect into custody at the scene. A firearm was also recovered, and investigators say the man being held has a concealed pistol license, according to ClickOnDetroit. Officers detained him without incident and remained outside the school into the evening, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.

In that earlier incident, officers urged parents to secure firearms and warned they would actively enforce curfew rules as temperatures climbed and school-area fights threatened to turn violent.

Homicide detectives with the Detroit Police Department are leading the current investigation. Once they finish collecting evidence and taking statements, the case file will be sent to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit for a charging decision, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. Prosecutors have not said when they might announce possible charges, as detectives continue to piece together how an argument outside an elementary school ended in a deadly shooting.
