A late-night rideshare drop in Philadelphia’s Elmwood Park neighborhood ended in tragedy early Monday when a 29-year-old woman was struck and killed while crossing Elmwood Avenue, police said. She had just stepped out of a rideshare vehicle and was walking across the street when an eastbound car hit her and kept going. Medics rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead at about 4:05 a.m.
NBC10 Philadelphia reports the hit-and-run happened at about 3:19 a.m. on the 7200 block of Elmwood Avenue, shortly after an Uber driver dropped the woman off. Investigators say the striking vehicle was moving east at a high rate of speed, and they are now combing through surveillance video from nearby businesses for any clue that could point them toward the driver.
Police Reviewing Video And Witness Accounts
According to WPVI/6ABC, the rideshare driver told officers the collision happened so quickly that they could only describe the suspect vehicle as a black car. The impact was so violent, police said, that it hurled the victim into the back of a parked vehicle before she landed on the sidewalk. Authorities have not publicly released her name as detectives continue to reconstruct the moments leading up to the crash.
