A three-vehicle rollover crash near State Route 57 in Elyria sent one driver to a trauma center and shut down both directions of Interstate 90 yesterday afternoon, July 30. The wreck left one vehicle heavily damaged and overturned in the median, turning a busy Lorain County corridor into an emergency scene.
According to Cleveland 19 News, firefighters reached the westbound lanes by climbing over the center barrier from the eastbound side. One of the other vehicles sustained minor damage with no injuries reported, while a second had moderate damage and an occupant with non-life-threatening injuries who was treated by firefighters.
The driver of the overturned vehicle was ejected during the crash and transported by LifeCare to the nearest Level III trauma center. A witness cited in the report said the vehicle appeared to strike another car, lose control, cross the barrier and roll several times. The driver's condition was not immediately available, and the cause remained under investigation.
Crash Hit An I-90 Construction Corridor
The closure came as Elyria police have been closely monitoring speeding in the I-90 construction zone. Spectrum News reported in June that officers had issued 157 speeding citations in the zone since January, including 80 citations during a four-day stretch, the average speed among cited drivers was 72 mph in a 55-mph work zone.
That enforcement data does not establish what caused yesterday's crash, and no driver was publicly identified in the initial report. For changing conditions on I-90 and other Ohio highways, the Ohio Department of Transportation's OHGO traffic system lists current incidents, closures and delays.
