A late-night clash inside a southeast Houston home ended in deadly gunfire over the weekend, leaving one man dead and another in custody after what police describe as a family-linked dispute.
Investigators say a man in his 50s shot and killed the boyfriend of his fiancee's daughter during a fight Saturday night. Responding officers and firefighters found the younger man gravely wounded. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The suspected gunman was detained at the scene and later taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Scene and response
Officers were called out around 11:10 p.m. to the 3700 block of Odin Court, where two men had gotten into a fight that escalated when one of them pulled a gun and shot the other in the chest, according to KPRC Click2Houston. Houston Fire Department crews began CPR on the victim before rushing him to a nearby hospital, the station reports.
Police say they recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting. A woman who was at the scene was detained as a witness and is cooperating with investigators, according to authorities.
Family tie under investigation
Investigators say the suspected shooter is engaged to a woman whose daughter was dating the victim. That family connection is a key piece of the ongoing probe, as detectives work to sort out what sparked the confrontation and how it turned deadly.
The case unfolds against a backdrop of other conflict-driven shootings in the city. In a June news release, the department described a separate incident in which a fight at an apartment complex escalated into deadly gunfire, according to the Houston Police Department. Investigators in the Odin Court case have not outlined a motive and say the investigation remains active.
Names and charges still withheld
Authorities have not released the names of the suspected shooter, the victim or the witness. No charges had been publicly announced as of the latest update, according to KPRC Click2Houston.
Police say the suspected gunman was taken into custody at the scene and later treated at a hospital in stable condition. The victim, believed to be in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the medical center where he was transported.
What investigators want to hear
Detectives are urging anyone who saw or heard anything to come forward as they work to reconstruct the moments leading up to the fatal shot. Tipsters can contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS, according to the Houston Police Department.
