A St. Clair man is behind bars after police say a burst of gunfire outside his home on Saturday turned a neighborhood street into an impromptu shooting range. Officers responding to reports of shots fired said they arrived to find an active exchange of gunfire and moved in to arrest a suspect, forwarding the case to the county prosecutor for review.
Police: Shots Fired on Murray Street
According to a post by the St. Clair Police Department on Facebook, officers were called to 250 Murray Street on Saturday after reports of shots fired and found two people both fighting and shooting at each other. Investigators reported recovering 60 spent .22-caliber casings, nine spent 9mm casings and three live .22 rounds at the scene, a sizable amount of ammunition for a residential block.
Witnesses identified Alan Fuller as one of the people discharging firearms, and police say Fuller admitted to firing a gun and to pointing a firearm at a witness during the confrontation.
Warrant, Arrest and Custody
Investigators say Fuller admitted he discharged his firearm and that he pointed it at a witness at point-blank range while shooting toward North Commercial Avenue and Bader Street, near where children were setting off fireworks. In the department's post, the St. Clair Police Department said a warrant was issued for Alan Fuller, and investigators forwarded their report to the Franklin County prosecuting attorney's office for review.
Officers took Fuller into custody and transported him to the Franklin County Adult Detention Center. St. Clair police said he is being held on a $50,000 cash-only bond.
What the Charges Mean
The department says the warrant seeks unlawful use of a weapon under the subsection for "exhibiting," along with an unlawful discharge of a firearm count. The Missouri State Highway Patrol charge code manual classifies subsection 4, exhibiting a weapon in a threatening manner, as a felony. Legal guides note that prosecutors must show the display of the weapon was done in an "angry or threatening" way; Rose Legal Services describes that requirement in the context of Missouri weapons cases.
Whether those potential charges move forward will depend on how prosecutors evaluate witness statements, any video evidence and any defenses available under Missouri law.
Next Steps and How to Help
The report has been forwarded to the Franklin County prosecuting attorney for review, and Fuller remains in custody at the county detention facility. The Franklin County Adult Detention Center lists its booking and bail procedures on the county website and gives the facility address as 1 Bruns Lane in Union, Missouri. Those county pages also outline official ways to check an inmate's status.
Anyone with video or additional information about the incident is asked to contact the St. Clair Police Department or Franklin County law-enforcement records.
Police did not list any injuries in their post. The prosecuting attorney's office will decide whether formal charges are filed after reviewing investigators' materials.
