Yesterday's commute through Kearny Mesa turned violent when a driver allegedly opened fire on another vehicle on the transition ramp from eastbound State Route 52 to southbound Interstate 15, injuring at least one person and bringing traffic to a crawl.
The targeted vehicle, a Ford Explorer, was carrying two women and a 7-year-old child. Authorities have not released the child’s condition. The shooting triggered a major law enforcement response and later an arrest connected to the attack.
According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, the California Highway Patrol said the violence broke out around 8:35 PM, when a Volkswagen driver allegedly opened fire on the Explorer as it merged onto the southbound I-15. The Explorer’s driver was taken to a hospital, and the CHP told the paper that the person’s condition was not immediately available. Investigators said the suspect fled the area, and officers later arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder and a weapons-related charge.
SR-52 to I-15 connector turns into crime scene
The connector between SR-52 and I-15 is a short, tightly curved ramp that draws heavy commuter traffic and fast lane changes, the kind of spot where tempers can flare in seconds. Last night, it became an active crime scene as traffic backed up and drivers crept past flashing lights and investigators.
The California Highway Patrol’s San Diego Area office responded and is leading the probe into the shooting. CHP San Diego Area oversees freeway incidents along this busy stretch, and investigators are reviewing evidence and witness accounts to piece together what happened on the ramp.
Arrest and search for motive
Authorities arrested a 27-year-old man yesterday in connection with the shooting and booked him on suspicion of attempted murder along with a weapons-related offense, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. Investigators said the suspected shooter drove off the ramp before officers arrived, and detectives are now working to determine what, if anything, sparked the confrontation.
The CHP has not publicly released the suspect’s name, and officials have also withheld updates on the hospitalized driver’s condition.
Road rage trouble is not new
Local freeways have seen their share of road-rage incidents in recent years, some ending in handcuffs, others in hospital visits. Hoodline previously covered a Vista case in which a man was charged after allegedly firing a rubber-bullet gun at another driver, highlighting just how quickly a bad lane change can turn into a criminal file.
What the suspect could face
The man arrested in the Kearny Mesa shooting faces serious potential charges if prosecutors decide to move forward, including attempted murder and weapons offenses. For now, those are only allegations, and the accused is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Attempted-murder counts in California can carry lengthy prison terms, and prosecutors will decide what to file after reviewing the CHP’s investigation. In the meantime, anyone with dashcam footage or information from the ramp around 8:35 p.m. is urged to contact investigators as the agency continues to sort out what unfolded on that short stretch of concrete.
