Rei Do Gado, the long-running Brazilian steakhouse in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, is set to fire the grills back up next Tuesday after a two-year closure, returning with roughly $1 million in renovations following a 2024 blaze that shut the place down.
According to ABC 10News, the grand reopening is slated for July 20, and the fire two years ago caused about $700,000 in damage. Creative director Rachel Lorraine Crawford told the outlet the revamped design pulls from “Brazil’s natural landscape,” while general manager Geoffrey Alegria said the extended shutdown gave the team time to rethink the entire space. Most of the equipment is fresh out of the box, but the goal is for the staff and service to feel very familiar to longtime regulars.
A Gaslamp Staple Since 1999
Rei Do Gado first opened in 1999 and still lists its home base as 939 4th Ave, the same address it is returning to after the rebuild, per Rei Do Gado. The site notes the restaurant has been closed since July 26, 2024, for construction and highlights the churrascaria’s run as the city’s longtime mesquite-charcoal steakhouse. As part of the comeback, management has added perks like Horton Plaza parking validation to sweeten the deal for downtown diners.
Menu Upgrades, Familiar Faces
The refreshed dining room will feature a VIP area and new menu additions, including Wagyu options, and the restaurant plans to bring back its original head chef, ABC 10News reports. The outlet also notes that once the reservation portal went live on Saturday, about 50 bookings rolled in overnight as management worked to shape the reopening into a true “homecoming.” Staff say they want the service and overall vibe to live up to the upgraded kitchen and dining room.
Why This Return Hits Different
The comeback restores one of the Gaslamp’s longest-running fixtures and could help stabilize foot traffic in a neighborhood that has seen plenty of restaurant turnover in recent years. Earlier coverage this year detailed how the Comic-Con period blaze shuttered the restaurant and displaced residents in the building above, underscoring how long the road back has been, per SanDiegoVille. Fans and longtime diners will get their first look at the new chapter next week when the doors open for the grand reopening.
