A quiet afternoon yesterday in Gastonia took a violent turn when a man was shot at a Greenview Drive apartment complex and later died at the hospital, according to local authorities. The shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. at the Greenview Meadows Apartments, where officers found 34-year-old Terrill C. Gilmore suffering from a gunshot wound. Gilmore was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Suspect and charges
Police records identify the suspect as 45-year-old James Lewis, who is now charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, as reported by WBTV. Investigators say they quickly developed Lewis as a suspect shortly after the shooting.
Arrest at another complex
Detectives tracked Lewis to the Hudson Landings Apartments on Hudson Road, where officers confronted him in a parking lot. According to a post from the Gastonia Police Department, Lewis was holding his 3-year-old child when police arrived. The child was not hurt, and police say Lewis surrendered peacefully.
Ongoing investigation
Lewis was taken into custody and faces the first-degree murder and firearm possession charges while the investigation continues. Prosecutors are still determining formal filings and court dates. Detectives have not released a possible motive and say they are continuing to collect evidence and conduct interviews. Initial reporting on the arrest and charges can be found at WBTV.
