Gotham FC’s title defense has taken a brutal hit: veteran defender Emily Sonnett is done for the 2026 NWSL season after suffering a serious left-knee injury in Portland. The U.S. Women’s National Team stalwart underwent surgery to repair a ruptured patellar tendon.
Gotham FC confirmed Friday that Sonnett will miss the rest of the campaign. Yael Averbuch West, the club’s president of soccer operations, said Sonnett has Gotham’s “full support” and described her as resilient.
Sonnett was injured early in Gotham’s 2-2 draw with the Portland Thorns on Friday, July 24, leaving the match in the 11th minute. The club’s match recap said Mandy Freeman replaced her in the lineup.
Gotham Loses A Veteran At The Worst Possible Time
The setback lands just weeks after Gotham extended Sonnett’s contract through 2028, underscoring how central she has become to the New York-area club. In announcing that deal, Gotham FC highlighted her role in the team’s 2025 championship run and her status as one of the league’s most accomplished defenders.
According to The Athletic, Gotham entered the latest stretch of the season at 10-3-4 through 17 matches, sitting second in the NWSL standings. The league campaign continues through the championship match on November 21, leaving Gotham with a long road ahead without one of its most experienced defensive organizers.
Sonnett’s absence also adds to a back line already dealing with injuries. Gotham had previously placed defender Kayla Duran on the season-ending injury list after a knee injury earlier this year, according to the club’s July availability update.
USWNT World Cup Qualifying Now Looms Larger
Sonnett has 118 appearances for the United States and is a 2019 World Cup champion and 2024 Olympic gold medalist, according to her U.S. Soccer profile. She has been one of the most trusted veteran options in Emma Hayes’ defense, capable of playing across the back line.
The Athletic reported that Sonnett is unlikely to be available for the USWNT’s expected November World Cup qualifiers, while the uncertain recovery timeline could also threaten her path to the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. That tournament is scheduled for June 24 through July 25, 2027, giving Sonnett time on paper—but a ruptured patellar tendon leaves no guarantees.
