A late-night Fourth of July confrontation in a Grand Prairie alley ended in gunfire and a deadly chase on foot, according to police.
Officers said they were called around 11:45 p.m. last Saturday to reports of shots fired in the 5000 block of Red River Trail. When they arrived, they found a 35-year-old man critically wounded in the alley. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police said the suspected gunman, identified as 20-year-old Eduardo Jaime of Cedar Hill, ran from the scene but did not get far. Officers arrested him shortly after he fled, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Victim Identified, Taken to Hospital
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as 35-year-old Robert Tovar.
Grand Prairie Fire medics transported Tovar to Medical City Arlington, where he was pronounced dead from multiple gunshot wounds.
How Police Say the Shooting Unfolded
Detectives said their early investigation shows that Tovar and Jaime were involved in a fight in the alley shortly before the shooting. During that confrontation, police say Jaime pulled out a handgun and shot Tovar. Jaime then took off on foot, but responding officers moved in quickly and caught him a short distance from the scene, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Investigation Ongoing
Grand Prairie police said the case remains under active investigation and have not yet released details about any charges. Detectives are still working to sort out what led up to the fight and are asking anyone with information to contact the department.
