A $10 lottery ticket bought at a Greenville convenience store has turned one Upstate grandmother into a half-million-dollar winner — and left her family scrambling to process the surprise.
The South Carolina Education Lottery said the unidentified woman won $500,000 on the ticket purchased at Buncombe Mini Stop on Old Buncombe Road, according to FOX Carolina. The winner has not been publicly identified, keeping at least one part of the windfall private.
Her family, however, apparently had no complaints about the lucky break. "They were happy for me. They said I deserved it," the grandmother told lottery officials, as reported by FOX Carolina.
Greenville Store Has Seen More Winning Tickets
The South Carolina Education Lottery’s official winners report lists Buncombe Mini Stop at 2805 Old Buncombe Rd. in Greenville and shows the store sold other winning tickets earlier in July, including a $615 Palmetto Cash 5 ticket and a $1,000 Millionaire Bonus ticket. This latest win is considerably larger — and the grandmother says she plans to donate some of the money to help others.
According to the South Carolina Education Lottery Board of Commissioners, the top prize for its $10 price point was increased from $300k to $500k in FY 2025. According to the South Carolina Education Lottery, the lottery recorded $2.4 billion in ticket sales, paid $1.6 billion in prize winnings to players and transferred $606.8 million for education. The South Carolina Education Lottery’s FY25 financial report shows total game revenues of $2,299.8 in FY 2025, down $84.9, or 3.6%, from $2,384.7 in FY 2024.
