Starting after 9 p.m. Friday, July 31, anyone heading toward Galveston is in for a plot twist at the Texas City Wye. As part of the I-45 expansion, crews are rolling out a major traffic shift that will shove southbound I-45 drivers onto a temporary detour, permanently cut off a long-used State Highway 146 connector and, officials caution, reshape daily commutes for roughly the next two years.
According to the Houston Chronicle, the westbound State Highway 146 connector to southbound I-45 at the Texas City Wye will shut down for good once the new traffic pattern kicks in. The outlet reports that this is just one piece of the larger Texas Department of Transportation plan, with shifting reroutes and rolling closures expected up and down the corridor over the next two years.
How the Detour Will Work
Under the new setup, southbound I-45 drivers will be steered off their usual path and told to turn right onto the northbound frontage road, then merge back onto the northbound mainlanes. From there, they will exit at FM 519, make a U-turn at that intersection and head back onto the southbound mainlanes, according to a city advisory from the City of La Marque.
For larger trucks and vehicles hauling trailers, that tight U-turn at FM 519 is off-limits. The city and Houston TranStar note that those drivers will instead turn left onto FM 519, then make another left onto the southbound frontage road to rejoin I-45, adding a few extra moves to the trip.
What the Expansion Adds
This reroute is one phase of a broader makeover of the Gulf Freeway between the Texas City Wye and the Galveston Causeway. The project will widen I-45, adding one lane in each direction to bring the total to eight mainlanes, along with two additional frontage-road lanes, a bike path and sidewalks. TxDOT also plans new U-turn and turning lanes at Harborside Drive, 71st Street and 61st Street, plus a one-lane direct connector from northbound 61st Street to the northbound freeway, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Officials are urging drivers to build in extra time, especially on weekends and peak travel days, and to stay on top of the rolling closures. Houston TranStar posts maps and nightly construction reports for the corridor so drivers can see what they are up against before getting on the road.
