Gunfire Chaos Rattles South Park Mall On San Antonio’s South Side
A routine Friday night at South Park Mall turned tense when a dispute escalated into gunfire on San Antonio’s South Side. Police say multiple shots were fired after a fight, and while no one was hit, officers later recovered firearms at the scene. The person who pulled the trigger was already gone by the time police arrived.
Police response and arrests
Officers were called to the mall around 7:10 p.m. on Friday and detained two people who matched witness descriptions, as reported by News 4 San Antonio. The station reports the two were trying to run on foot when officers stopped them and that police found two firearms nearby.
According to police, surveillance video later reviewed by officers shows what touched off the chaos. The footage captures a physical altercation that ends with one person being struck, then retrieving a handgun and firing multiple rounds. Investigators say none of those shots hit anyone.
Not the first time at South Park
The mall has seen gun violence before, which is one reason this latest burst of shots is likely to draw extra scrutiny. A December 2019 shooting that wounded four people was documented by the San Antonio Express-News, and a 2023 parking lot confrontation over a stolen truck ended in a deadly exchange, per KSAT. Those earlier incidents have already kept a spotlight on safety at the big Southwest Side shopping center.
Investigation ongoing
News 4 San Antonio reports that the surveillance footage shows the person being struck before grabbing a handgun and opening fire, and that the shooter left before officers got to the scene. The case remains under investigation, and it was not immediately clear whether any charges would be filed against the two people who were detained.
Authorities have not released the identities of the people detained and have not provided details about any potential charges. This story will be updated if the San Antonio Police Department or other officials release additional information.
