A late-night summer sleepover in DeKalb County turned into a tragedy that shook an entire neighborhood. Now, authorities say they have the man they believe pulled the trigger.
Twenty-one-year-old Keyshun Webb was arrested Tuesday in Hampton in connection with a predawn shooting last Thursday that tore through a DeKalb County home, killing a 13-year-old boy and a 45-year-old man. Investigators accuse Webb of firing into the house and say he is now facing murder and aggravated assault charges, along with an animal-cruelty count. He is being held without bond, according to officials.
Arrest made in Hampton
Deputies picked Webb up in the 1700 block of Portwest Way in Hampton, according to FOX 5 Atlanta, which reports that a fugitive unit carried out the arrest on Tuesday. Investigators allege Webb opened fire on a home in the 2400 block of Rockcliff Road SE in DeKalb just before 4 a.m. last Thursday. He has been booked on two counts of murder, eight counts of aggravated assault with a weapon and one count of cruelty to animals. FOX 5 Atlanta reports Webb is being held without bond at the DeKalb County Jail.
Scene and victims
Inside the home, detectives found 13-year-old Demarcus Shirley and 45-year-old Chauncey Newman dead, with evidence markers scattered across the street outside. The shooting unfolded in the Gresham Park area, where police say several young boys had gathered for a sleepover. No other people inside the home were injured, and investigators have not released a motive, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Children who were at the sleepover told reporters they woke up to a single loud thump, then rushed outside and discovered the victims. Neighbors and kids at the scene told WSB‑TV that the older victim, Newman, was affectionately known as "Pops" and was known for letting local kids hang out at his house. WSB‑TV also reported that a dog at the home was found shot and killed.
Sheriff's statement and investigation
DeKalb County Sheriff Melody M. Maddox credited teamwork for getting a suspect into custody, calling the arrest a clear example of "the importance of strong partnerships" when it comes to tracking down fugitives. In a statement to FOX 5 Atlanta, she praised the Fugitive Unit and partner agencies for their work on the case. Homicide detectives are still digging into what led up to the gunfire and say they are actively following leads.
Legal next steps
Webb now faces multiple felony counts and will remain behind bars while investigators and prosecutors continue building the case. Court officials are expected to schedule an arraignment and consider any potential indictments in the coming days. Because he is being held without bond, Webb is expected to stay at the DeKalb County Jail during pretrial proceedings. The sheriff's office said it plans to release additional details as they become available.
Authorities are still asking for the public's help. Anyone with information is urged to contact the DeKalb County Police Department. Tips can be submitted through the department's app or by texting "DKPD" to 847411, according to CBS News Atlanta. Officials are particularly interested in hearing from witnesses who may have video or other evidence from the area last Thursday and say that information could be crucial to the investigation.
