Yesterday's afternoon drive on Harvard Avenue in Newburgh Heights turned deadly when a dump truck veered off the road and smashed into a line of utility poles, killing the driver and shutting down the busy corridor for hours, authorities said. The crash happened just after 3 p.m. near Washington Park Boulevard, snarling traffic as police, firefighters and utility crews flooded the scene. Investigators with the Ohio State Highway Patrol said a 2006 Mack dump truck went off the right side of Harvard Avenue, hit three utility poles, then crossed the center line and struck a curb on the opposite side before coming to a stop. Troopers identified the driver as 61-year-old Winfield Starcher of Brook Park. He died from his injuries and was not wearing a seat belt, according to investigators. Traffic was diverted around the scene, and Harvard Avenue remained closed during the cleanup, according to FOX 8.
