A late-night house party in south suburban Harvey ended in tragedy early Monday when a former Morgan Park High School football standout was shot and killed, authorities said. Officials identified the victim as 20-year-old Keshawn Lewis-Hunt, a one-time star for Morgan Park who later joined the Eastern Illinois University football program. Two other people were also wounded in the shooting as police and medics rushed to the scene.
Harvey police said officers responded around 1:15 a.m. to reports of gunfire in the 16000 block of Ashland Avenue. Multiple victims were taken by medics to UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital, where Lewis-Hunt was later pronounced dead, according to WGN-TV. The Cook County Medical Examiner identified him as Lewis-Hunt, and police told reporters the suspected shooter was still at large, WGN reported.
Victim's background and football career
Lewis-Hunt was a standout at Morgan Park on Chicago’s South Side and earned All-Chicago Public League honors twice, helping the Mustangs reach the state quarterfinals, according to his bio on Eastern Illinois athletics. The program listed him as a freshman linebacker who redshirted and did not appear in games in 2024, details that outline where he stood in his college career.
Investigation and public safety
Detectives are investigating the shooting and, at this point, there does not appear to be an ongoing threat to the public, Harvey police said, according to WGN-TV. Officers have asked anyone who was at the party, or who has video or other information, to contact the Harvey Police Department as the probe continues.
University response
Eastern Illinois University said in a statement that it is "deeply saddened by the death of former Panther football student-athlete Keshawn Lewis-Hunt" and that it is offering support to those affected. The university added that it would not comment further out of respect for his family, according to the school’s news page. The athletics department roster and game notes provide additional background on Lewis-Hunt’s high school and college career.
