
A late-night highway construction shift in Hawthorne turned deadly Tuesday when a contractor working on a New York State Department of Transportation project fell from the Taconic State Parkway overpass onto the southbound lanes of the Saw Mill River Parkway, authorities said. Emergency crews found the man in cardiac arrest, performed CPR at the scene, and later pronounced him dead. The Saw Mill River Parkway was shut down in both directions overnight while investigators documented the scene.
According to Daily Voice, Westchester County police said the fall happened around 10:10 p.m. on July 14 after multiple 911 callers reported that a person had gone over the Taconic overpass and landed in the southbound lanes. The department told the outlet the victim was a man in his 30s from New York City who had been working as a contractor on an NYSDOT construction job. His name has not yet been released pending notification of his family.
Parkway Closed While Crews Worked
Traffic service 511NY recorded police activity showing the southbound Saw Mill River Parkway blocked at Exit 26, where it meets the Taconic State Parkway, as first responders and investigators worked the scene. Traffic updates later indicated the roadway reopened in the early hours of July 15.
Investigation Ongoing
Westchester County Police patrol officers and detectives from the department's General Investigations Unit are leading the case, the department told Daily Voice. Officials have not released additional information about the circumstances of the fall and say the investigation is still active.
