A Wednesday drive on S.C. Highway 5 turned deadly when a three-vehicle crash near Pine Avenue in York County left one driver dead and briefly shut down the road, authorities said. First responders rushed to the scene and blocked traffic while troopers worked the wreck. Officials have not yet released the victim’s name as they continue to sort out how the crash unfolded.
According to Queen City News, the South Carolina Highway Patrol says a 2015 Isuzu SUV crossed the centerline and hit a 2014 Isuzu truck before colliding with a Kenworth tractor-trailer. Investigators told the outlet the SUV’s driver died at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
The wreck comes on the heels of a busy holiday stretch for state troopers. The South Carolina Department of Public Safety reported seven roadway deaths during the July 2–5 Independence Day period and maintains a county-by-county fatality tally that helps troopers track trends and decide where to put their resources. South Carolina Department of Public Safety officials also remind drivers that Highway Patrol investigates serious collisions and that coroners release victim information only after next-of-kin notifications and autopsies are complete.
Investigation And Coroner Procedure
Troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol are leading the on-scene investigation, while the York County Coroner’s Office is expected to release more details about the person who died once the family has been contacted, Queen City News reports. Authorities have not said whether speed, impairment or any other specific factor might have contributed to the crash. Those answers typically come later, after a full reconstruction and the coroner’s findings.
What Locals Should Know
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash-cam video from S.C. Highway 5 around the time of the collision is asked to contact the South Carolina Highway Patrol or the York County Coroner’s Office so investigators can follow up. For public and media questions, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety lists a Highway Patrol media line and posts confirmed fatality counts and official statements on its website: South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
The York County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the victim and release the official cause of death after notifying relatives and completing any required post-mortem testing. This story will be updated as officials provide additional details from the Highway Patrol investigation and the coroner’s report.
