A Houston high school teacher who spent his days on a law-and-justice focused campus is now facing the criminal justice system himself, after prosecutors say he carried on a sexual relationship with a former student.
Court documents allege 40-year-old Jesse Sifuentes engaged in repeated sexual contact with the former student after she turned 18, along with exchanging hundreds of explicit messages. The filings say the encounters unfolded over several months in 2024. Sifuentes was removed from classroom duties in April and has since been arrested and charged.
According to ABC13 Houston, prosecutors have charged Sifuentes with two counts of improper relationship with a student. A former pupil told investigators the pair had sex at least eight times and traded more than 400 messages, including nude photos and videos. The student first met Sifuentes during her junior year in 2022, and the alleged sexual relationship began shortly after she turned 18. The first encounter is described in charging records as occurring in March 2024 at a park in north Houston. Court records show Sifuentes posted a $45,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court in August.
What the court records allege
The charging papers outline an alleged three month stretch in 2024 during which the sexual encounters took place. Investigators say the first meeting involved oral sex in Sifuentes' car, with additional off-campus encounters arranged afterward.
Detectives reported recovering a large volume of explicit digital communications between Sifuentes and the former student as part of the investigation, according to the same court filings.
Where he taught
Sifuentes worked at the High School for Law and Justice, a Houston ISD magnet campus that specializes in legal and criminal justice career pathways. The school promotes programs designed to give students early exposure to law-related fields and public safety professions.
District response
In a statement to ABC13 Houston, Houston ISD said it acted as soon as the accusations surfaced.
"The safety and well-being of our students are our highest priorities. As soon as the allegations came to the District's attention in April, the individual was immediately removed from the classroom and has not been on campus, around students, or involved in school activities since that time," the district said.
Houston ISD added that HISD Police and district administrators are actively investigating the case.
Legal consequences
Prosecutors brought the case under Texas Penal Code Section 21.12, the improper-relationship-between-educator statute, which bans sexual contact between school employees and students at the campuses where they work. The law can apply even when the student is legally an adult.
An offense under Section 21.12 is generally classified as a second-degree felony. Under Texas law, a second-degree felony is punishable by a prison term ranging from two to 20 years. The statutory language and sentencing guidelines are outlined in Texas Penal Code Sec. 21.12 and Sec. 12.33.

The case lands at a time when Texas is seeing a noticeable spike in educator-misconduct investigations, including allegations of inappropriate relationships.
