Gov. Kathy Hochul is rolling out more than $58 million in transportation work across Long Island, a construction blitz that will resurface about 104 lane miles of state road, overhaul several clogged intersections and rehab a key runway at Republic Airport. The projects, spread across Nassau and Suffolk counties, are meant to smooth daily commutes, make it safer to walk along busy corridors and replace tired pavement and aging airport surfaces. Some jobs are scheduled to wrap by the end of 2026, while others will stretch into summer 2027, so drivers and general aviation pilots should brace for lane shifts, intermittent closures and plenty of overnight work.
In a press release via the New York State Department of Transportation, the Office of Gov. Kathy Hochul said the effort "will renew and upgrade roadways, intersections and airports to strengthen the economy and create jobs." The breakdown puts $34.3 million into work on Routes 24 and 110, $10.1 million into Route 25 projects, $6.9 million into repairs on Sunrise Highway and the Sunken Meadow Parkway, and $6.7 million into runway improvements at Republic Airport.

Major Corridors Set for Fresh Asphalt
The largest slice of the package, about $34.3 million, targets State Route 24 (Hempstead Turnpike/Conklin Street) and State Route 110 (Broadhollow Road), covering roughly 86 lane miles in total. On Route 24, crews will resurface the stretch between the Meadowbrook State Parkway and Route 110, renewing about 50.6 lane miles. Route 110 will see 35.8 lane miles repaved and more than 280 curb ramps upgraded to current ADA standards, according to the New York State Department of Transportation.
Intersection Fixes Aim to Untangle Traffic
Another $10.1 million is set aside for two projects along State Route 25 in Suffolk County. That work includes about 18 lane miles of repaving and storm-drain improvements, plus a reconfiguration of Middle Country Road at Coram–Mount Sinai Road in Brookhaven that will add a dedicated left-turn lane, an auxiliary lane and reconstructed sidewalks. Several other intersections across Nassau and Suffolk, including Northern Boulevard at Community Drive, Fulton Street at Main Street in Farmingdale and Jericho Turnpike at County Route 14, will be reworked to lengthen turn lanes and smooth out merging, News 12 Long Island reports.
Republic Airport Runway Work to Shuffle Flights
A $6.7 million project at the New York State Department of Transportation-owned Republic Airport will resurface Runway 1-19 and add related safety improvements. The north-south runway will be shut down during construction, with aircraft operations shifted to Runway 14-32, and the airport is expected to pause operations for about one week during that changeover, according to NYSDOT project documents. The runway rehabilitation is also listed on Republic Airport's administration page, which pilots and tenants are urged to watch for NOTAMs and final closure dates.
How Drivers Should Plan Around Construction
State transportation officials say the heaviest work will be scheduled during off-peak hours to limit backups, but motorists should still be ready for lane shifts, temporary closures and night crews across the affected routes. Travelers can keep tabs on traffic and construction conditions through 511NY or by checking electronic message boards near active work zones to plot alternate routes and pad travel times.
"By renewing and upgrading our roadways, intersections and airports, we are laying the foundation to strengthen our economy and create jobs," Hochul said in the announcement. Officials added that the Long Island push is part of a broader statewide effort this construction season to speed up pavement renewal and tackle safety and accessibility issues on heavily traveled corridors.
