A downtown First Friday concert in Gainesville, Ga., ended in gunfire Friday night, leaving one man dead and another injured, according to police.
Officers patrolling the Midland area found the first victim shortly after 10 p.m. and began treating him. While rendering aid, they located a second wounded man nearby, who was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, according to WSB‑TV.
Police and other first responders performed life-saving measures on the first victim and transported him to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he later died, FOX 5 Atlanta reported. Investigators have not released the victims' names and have not announced any arrests.
Where it happened
The city moved the July First Friday Concert to the Midland Greenway for the holiday weekend, with a headliner and fireworks scheduled around 9:30 p.m., according to a City of Gainesville announcement. The notice lists the Midland Greenway at 682 Grove St. and says the show was scheduled from about 7 to 10 p.m.
Hospital and response
Officials say the first victim was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville, whose website notes the campus provides comprehensive emergency and trauma services for the region. First responders and hospital staff worked to save the man, but he later died at NGMC, authorities said.
Local context
The shooting follows months of high‑profile public‑safety incidents in the area, including an hourslong March standoff that ended with a suspect dead and an officer injured and that drew a Georgia Bureau of Investigation review. That episode helped focus local law enforcement and community leaders on crowd safety for downtown events and on urging witnesses to report what they saw.
How to help
Gainesville police asked anyone who was in the area at the time to call 911 or submit an anonymous tip through the Gainesville Police Department's tip portal. Authorities said they welcome video or eyewitness information as the investigation continues.
