Interstate 80 turned into a holiday gridlock zone Sunday morning after a pursuit ended in a deputy-involved shooting near Antelope Road in Citrus Heights, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office. The shutdown choked traffic for hours on a busy travel day, trapping drivers and drawing a heavy law-enforcement presence. Officials said details were limited while investigators processed the scene and that more information would be released when it becomes available.
According to FOX40, deputies had been following a vehicle when the pursuit ended on I-80 near Antelope Road and a deputy-involved shooting occurred. FOX40 reported that the sheriff's office said a suspect drove away after being located by deputies and that the shooting happened after the pursuit was terminated. The outlet added that part of the freeway was closed Sunday morning while investigators worked the scene.
Traffic snarls and detours
Drivers were urged to steer clear of the area while crews cleared the scene. For live status updates and detour information, motorists were directed to check Caltrans QuickMap. The closure funneled vehicles onto nearby surface streets as traffic was diverted off the freeway, creating backups across Citrus Heights and neighboring communities. Emergency responders remained on scene while authorities collected evidence and cleared the roadway.
Investigation and review
FOX40 reported that investigators from the sheriff’s office were processing the scene and that information remained sparse as the shooting was reviewed. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office independently reviews officer-involved shootings that result in injury or death and publishes a written report when its review is complete, according to the DA's office. That review focuses on whether any criminal laws were violated and typically follows the law-enforcement investigation.
We will update this story when the sheriff’s office or prosecutors release names, injuries or potential charges. Drivers are advised to check official traffic feeds before heading through the area.
