Houston’s homebuying economy generated a striking $24.6 billion in purchase mortgages last year, concentrated among the 100 lenders that topped a new regional ranking. The number offers a snapshot of where the city’s housing money flowed as buyers navigated still-elevated rates and a market with more breathing room.
The Houston Business Journal ranked lenders by Houston-area mortgage volume for 2025. The online list includes 100 companies, compared with the 20 lenders featured in the print edition.
What The Houston Mortgage Ranking Measures
The ranking is based on purchase loans reported through the federal Home Mortgage Disclosure Act platform, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The agency made 2025 loan-level data available in March, covering records from approximately 4,768 HMDA filers nationwide.
The Houston analysis covers residential properties with four or fewer units across Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, San Jacinto and Waller counties. As the Houston Business Journal notes, the figures exclude refinances, cash-out refinancing, home-improvement loans and other non-purchase purposes.
Houston Buyers Found More Room To Shop
The timing of the ranking lands as Houston’s housing market shows signs of loosening without exactly becoming cheap. The Houston Association of Realtors reported that June single-family home sales rose 3.5% from a year earlier, while pending sales jumped 12.3% and the median price held at $345,000.
Mortgage rates also eased from the prior year, with the average 30-year fixed rate at 6.49% in June compared with 6.82% a year earlier, according to Houston Association of Realtors data. HAR estimated that the change saved a buyer of a median-priced home with 20% down about $65 per month in principal and interest.
For consumers, the list is best read as a volume scoreboard rather than a definitive guide to the “best” lender. A lender’s ranking can reflect scale and market reach, but shoppers still need to compare rates, fees, closing costs, loan programs and the service offered for their particular purchase.
