A Jacksonville man is in critical condition after an early-morning hit-and-run on an I-295 flyover ramp, according to authorities. The crash took place on the ramp that carries traffic from I-95 southbound to I-295 southbound. Emergency crews rushed the motorcyclist to a hospital, while investigators continue searching for the vehicle that took off. Officials have not released the rider’s name or additional medical details.
Crash details from the Florida Highway Patrol
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash involved a 23-year-old Jacksonville man and happened around 4:53 a.m. when a pickup truck shifted to the right into the motorcycle’s lane, cutting into the rider’s path and causing him to lose control. The motorcycle struck a concrete barrier, and the rider went over the barrier onto a grass shoulder and an exit leading to the I-295 northbound entrance ramp, as reported by News4JAX. Troopers said the pickup kept going southbound on I-295 and did not stop. The crash report lists the rider’s condition as “critical,” and FHP has asked anyone with information about the truck or where it might be now to contact the agency.
Hit-and-run trend in Florida and locally
Hit-and-run crashes remain a stubborn problem across Florida. Statewide, there were roughly 97,519 hit-and-run crashes last year, a number that helps explain why investigators keep hammering home the message that drivers must stay at the scene. Local coverage has highlighted several recent hit-and-runs in Duval County, and officials say community tips such as dash-cam clips, doorbell videos and partial license plates often provide the breaks that move these cases forward. That pattern has led to repeated calls for witnesses to step up after serious crashes.
Legal consequences for leaving the scene
Florida law requires any driver involved in a crash that causes injury to stop, exchange information and provide reasonable aid. Leaving instead can lead to felony charges under Florida Statute 316.027. The penalties depend on how severe the injuries are and the specific circumstances, but they can include prison time, fines and license-related consequences under the statute. Prosecutors may also pursue enhanced charges when a crash results in serious bodily injury or death.
How to help investigators
The Florida Highway Patrol is urging anyone who might have seen the crash or who has relevant video to contact troopers and to preserve any footage that could help identify the fleeing vehicle. News4JAX reports that FHP is specifically looking for information about the pickup that continued southbound on I-295. Investigators are asking community members with dash-cam recordings, doorbell video or partial plate numbers tied to that truck to share them with law enforcement to support the ongoing investigation.
