A 22-year-old Markleton man was killed Sunday when his Jeep was rear-ended on southbound Interstate 99 in Antis Township, Blair County, in a violent collision that pushed his SUV off the highway and into the berm, according to state police.
According to the Tribune-Democrat, the victim was identified as Jason S. Sargent Jr., 22, of Markleton. State police said the crash happened July 19, and the paper reports that the Blair County coroner pronounced Sargent dead at the scene while investigators continued their work along the interstate.
Local reporting from the Altoona Mirror says Sargent was driving a 2012 Jeep Compass that was struck from behind by a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500. The impact pushed the Jeep roughly 150 feet into the berm. The Mirror also reports an autopsy was scheduled in Windber and that the pickup's 18-year-old driver from Jersey Shore and his 16-year-old passenger from Linden were taken to UPMC Altoona with suspected minor injuries.
Investigation and response
State police are leading the investigation, and according to the Tribune-Democrat, the Blair County Coroner's Office and Bellwood and Logan Township fire departments assisted at the scene. Officials have not released any information on possible citations or charges while the crash remains under review, and collision reconstruction work could take days to complete.
I-99 safety context
The stretch of I-99 through Blair County has seen multiple serious collisions this year, including a March crash near Tyrone that proved fatal and highlighted how fast a problem on this corridor can turn deadly, as the Altoona Mirror reported. Local emergency responders say factors such as wrong-way drivers, disabled vehicles and high closing speeds can quickly turn what looks like a routine breakdown into a deadly scene.
