A months-long Jacksonville investigation that led to sexual battery and false imprisonment charges against a 22-year-old man has ended without a prosecution, according to updated court records. Mark Bond, who was arrested July 1, is no longer facing the charges tied to an alleged February hotel encounter.
News4Jax reported that all charges against Bond were dropped, and that he is no longer being held in the case. The outlet said it contacted the State Attorney’s Office for more information, but the update did not provide a reason for the decision.
The allegations stemmed from an incident reported at a Jacksonville Red Roof Inn on Feb. 26. A sexual battery report was filed March 1, and investigators later assembled digital evidence, a recorded controlled call and interviews with the woman and Bond.
What The Investigation Allegedly Uncovered
In its earlier arrest report, News4Jax said the woman told investigators she had rejected Bond’s advances repeatedly and later escaped after he fell asleep. The report also described a Snapchat exchange between the two and statements investigators said Bond made during a controlled call and interview.
Police characterized the alleged encounter as involving coerced submission, according to the affidavit described in the reporting. Bond denied no conviction because the charges were dropped, and he remained legally presumed innocent throughout the case.
What The Charges Meant Under Florida Law
Florida law defines consent as intelligent, knowing and voluntary agreement, and specifically says consent does not include coerced submission, according to the Florida Legislature. State law separately defines false imprisonment as forcibly, secretly or by threat restraining someone without lawful authority and against that person’s will.
The latest records do not indicate whether prosecutors expect any new charges, whether additional testing affected the case or why the existing counts were dropped. For now, the criminal case described in the July 30 update has ended with no conviction against Bond.
