Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced the verdict in an official update Wednesday, saying Morros was convicted at trial and noting that Berry’s daughter witnessed the killing. The post did not include a sentencing date or spell out the individual counts.
What Happened Inside The Inwood Bodega
Berry was shot in the chest around 4 p.m. on Dec. 15, 2022, after an argument began inside the deli, according to ABC7 New York. Police said surveillance video showed the suspect leave before returning with a gun, and Berry died after being taken to Harlem Hospital.
Earlier coverage by Patch reported that prosecutors accused Morros of demanding Berry come outside before returning to the store with a pointed gun. Berry then rushed at Morros, and the fatal shot was fired as the confrontation moved toward the entrance, according to the account released when Morros was indicted.
A Case That Shook The Neighborhood
The shooting drew attention in Inwood because it unfolded in a busy neighborhood bodega while Berry’s daughter was nearby. 1010 WINS reported at the time that the child was not physically injured and that witnesses tried to keep her from seeing Berry after he was shot.
Morros was originally arrested and indicted on murder and criminal possession of a weapon charges. With Wednesday’s verdict, the case has moved from a prosecution allegation to a jury finding of guilt, while details about sentencing remain pending or were not included in the announcement.
