Sam Neill, the New Zealand-born actor best known to millions as Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, died Monday in Sydney at the age of 78, his family said. In a message shared by relatives, his death was described as “sudden and unexpected,” and they noted that Neill “remained cancer free.” No immediate cause of death was given.
The family announcement was posted on Neill’s official social account, according to AP. Loved ones said he was surrounded by family and offered thanks to staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their care, per Boston 25.
A Cinematic Life And Honors
Neill’s career spanned more than five decades and racked up over 150 screen credits, moving easily between art house projects and big Hollywood blockbusters, according to The Guardian. He shot to international fame as Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park and later accepted a New Zealand knighthood after previously being named an OBE.
Cancer Battle And Recovery
Neill first revealed in 2023 that he had been diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, while promoting his memoir, according to CNN. In April he said he was cancer free after taking part in a CAR-T clinical trial in Australia, a recovery reported by Variety.
Final Roles And Farewells
One of Neill’s final credits is the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, which is in post production, according to IMDb. Tributes from both sides of the Tasman Sea poured in: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised Neill on social media, and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon called him “one of the greats,” as covered by Reuters.
He is survived by four children and several grandchildren, his family said. Neill also leaves behind Two Paddocks, the Central Otago winery he founded in 1997, a quieter passion that reflected the private life he cherished, according to AP.
