Kalamazoo is getting loud long before the first amp is plugged in. Greenleaf Hospitality Group has launched an online survey asking local residents and visiting fans which artists, genres, and event types they want to see at the under-construction Kalamazoo Event Center. The questionnaire lands as construction cranes keep moving and early booking plans take shape for a projected fall 2027 opening.
Survey Asks Fans Which Acts They Want
The questionnaire, released on Thursday, lists musical genres including bluegrass, jam bands, classic rock, country, hip hop and R&B, and jazz and blues, and also invites write-in artist names, according to MLive. The survey also checks in on whether people want comedy, theater and dance, expos and sporting events on the calendar. Organizers say the responses will help shape early programming priorities as the center moves toward opening.
By The Numbers: What The Arena Can Hold
The new venue is planned at roughly 453,000 square feet and can be configured for about 6,500 spectators for sporting events and up to 8,000 for concerts, per the Kalamazoo Event Center's FAQ. The privately funded project carries an estimated $515 million price tag, a figure local business coverage has reported. Organizers say the center is expected to host more than 230 events a year, attract over 700,000 visitors and generate roughly $50 million in annual economic impact for the region, per the venue's public materials; Hoodline previously highlighted the site's launch last year.
Docuseries Chronicles The Build
The project team has rolled out a 13-episode docuseries that follows the build and the people behind it, with Episode 1, titled "Built for Kalamazoo," already available to watch. Western Michigan University says the series documents milestones, partners, and community voices as the center rises downtown. The Kalamazoo Wings and other local partners have been pushing the video as a way to pull residents into the planning conversation instead of leaving them watching from the sidelines.
What This Means For Bookings
With an upper capacity of about 8,000, the Event Center sits in a sweet spot for touring artists that route through mid-size markets, although landing headline shows will still require careful routing, strong promoter relationships and strategic calendar blocking. Industry observers note that mid-market venues tend to win dates by packaging regional runs, offering consistent production quality and giving agents firm dates well in advance. Local demand data from the survey could give the operator concrete evidence to back up pitch decks when making competitive cases to agents during long-range negotiations.
Local Reaction
Neighborhood leaders and small-business owners are mostly welcoming the promise of more foot traffic and jobs, even as they push for clearer guarantees that local residents and Black- and Brown-owned businesses will share in the upside. Northside organizers and the NACD have called for transparent hiring and vendor processes. Greenleaf's HR director has said the center should produce a net gain of about 400 jobs once operations shift from the Wings Event Center. Town-hall meetings and local coverage show residents want a programming mix that reflects Kalamazoo's diversity instead of just importing a generic touring schedule.
How To Have Your Say
Greenleaf and the Event Center team have made the survey available online and are urging locals to weigh in on which artists and event types should rise to the top of the booking list. Coverage by MLive and information on the Kalamazoo Event Center website provide links to the questionnaire and additional context. Organizers say survey responses will feed directly into early programming conversations as they assemble season plans for the first years of operations.
