Keith Mitchell, the hard-hitting former New Orleans Saints linebacker who later reinvented himself as a mindfulness and yoga instructor, has died at 51. His death was announced Thursday, and officials have not released a cause of death or other details, according to KBTX.
TMZ also reported Mitchell’s death, noting that the first word surfaced from a local outlet and that information about the circumstances was not immediately available.
Texas A&M 'Wrecking Crew' star
Texas A&M athletics confirmed Mitchell’s death to local station KBTX, which reported that the Garland native was a standout on the Aggies’ famed "Wrecking Crew" defense and a 1996 All-American. Texas A&M notes on its Hall of Fame listing that Mitchell was inducted in 2015 and still ranks among the program’s career sack leaders.
NFL career and Pro Bowl season
Despite going undrafted in 1997, Mitchell earned a roster spot with the New Orleans Saints, played his way into the starting lineup, and reached the Pro Bowl in 2000. Over 94 NFL games with the Saints, the Houston Texans, and the Jacksonville Jaguars, he was credited with roughly 408 total tackles, 19.5 sacks, and four interceptions, according to Pro-Football-Reference.
From spinal injury to mindfulness
Mitchell’s playing days ended abruptly in 2003 when he suffered a spinal injury that left him temporarily paralyzed, a turning point he later described as the push that sent him toward yoga and meditation, per The Washington Post. In the years that followed, he led wellness retreats and developed a mindfulness program built around his experiences.
He also authored a book, "The Mindfulness Mastery Playbook," which his site lists as having been published in late 2025; details about the book and his programs are outlined on Keith Mitchell's website.
What we still don't know

His former teams and other representatives also had not issued further comment, according to KBTX.
