Kelly Drive is about to trade morning joggers for racing shells. The Independence Day Regatta hits the Schuylkill River this weekend, bringing three straight days of national-caliber racing from Friday through Sunday along the Fairmount Park course, with finals lined up for Sunday afternoon.
Organizers say roughly 5,000 rowers and nearly 100 teams from 18 states and other countries are set to compete. Admission is free, and food trucks and vendors will be stationed along Kelly Drive for spectators looking to make a day of it. Organizers held a press conference at 11 a.m. today, and the preview was streamed by local outlets, according to CBS Philadelphia.
Why the date changed
This year is a one-time move off the usual July 4 slot, driven by the city’s packed July calendar. America 250 programming and a large FIFA Fan Festival at Lemon Hill stacked up on the same stretch of days and made the holiday weekend unusually congested, per Visit Philadelphia. Organizers said shifting the regatta to the final week of July lets fans, teams and hotels avoid direct overlap with those signature events.
Schedule and who’s racing
Time trials are slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. Friday, with racing scheduled to start at 8:00 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday unless the number of heats forces an earlier launch. Most events will run on the standard 2,000‑meter course, while adaptive doubles, U15 singles and masters races are set for 1,000 meters.
The regatta bulletin notes that Regatta HQ and weigh-ins will be located just downriver of St. Joe’s boathouse. There is no on-site registration, so coaches and crews are being told to review official instructions before they show up on Kelly Drive.
