The makeshift memorial marks the spot where a neighborhood dispute ended with 41-year-old Yolanda Haynes fatally stabbed outside a convenience store and a murder charge filed days later, leaving relatives to mourn while investigators pressed forward with their case against another woman.
Community members have turned the storefront into a place of remembrance, gathering for a vigil near the scene, according to First Coast News. Family and friends described Haynes as loving and well known around the neighborhood, a presence they say is now painfully missing from daily life along Kings Road.
What Happened On Kings Road
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officers responded last Thursday to a stabbing call outside Leyu Food Store on Kings Road and found Haynes suffering from severe wounds. She was taken to a hospital and later died, News4JAX reported. According to police, the stabbing followed a physical altercation between Haynes and another woman and involved a sharp object.
Arrest Follows Detective Review
JSO initially arrested 36-year-old Brittany McLean on aggravated battery and evidence tampering charges. Detectives later reviewed her statement, witness accounts and physical evidence, then upgraded the case to a murder charge. Speaking to News4JAX, Haynes’ sister, Sheila Dixon Williams, said, “Yolanda was more than what she lost her life for.”
Motive Remains Unclear
McLean was arrested on the murder charge last Friday and remained in the Duval County jail awaiting a court appearance, according to police reporting. A clear motive has not been established in public accounts, and claims that the confrontation started over 10 dollars remain unconfirmed unless investigators or court records later provide more detail.
McLean is accused, not convicted, and the charge will move through the criminal court system in the weeks and months ahead. For Haynes’ family and neighbors, the memorial along Kings Road already tells its own story, one about a woman remembered through the people who loved her and the corner they now struggle to reclaim.
