
New Zealand-founded Zenno Astronautics is packing up its official home base and heading for Los Angeles, betting big that the city’s booming space scene is the right place to scale its superconducting systems for satellites. The company’s Z01 "Supertorquer" recently flew in orbit, giving the young hardware player that coveted "flight heritage" stamp and fresh leverage with both customers and investors. Zenno says it will keep engineering roots in Auckland while it builds out a larger U.S. presence, but it has yet to sign on the dotted line for permanent L.A. offices or factory space.
Zenno announced the move in a company release that framed Los Angeles as its new global headquarters and said the redomicile is meant to put the team closer to customers, partners and government programs, according to Business Wire. The release added that Zenno plans to grow its U.S. workforce and is weighing future investments in manufacturing and test infrastructure. On the ground, the company is still shopping for suitable space in the region as it gears up to hire, L.A. Business First reported.
Z01 Supertorquer: Flight-Tested Superconducting Hardware
Zenno’s Z01 Supertorquer is a superconducting magnetic actuator built to provide fuel-free attitude control in orbit, and it has already seen real action. The device flew aboard Impulse Space’s Mira satellite and successfully operated in space, a key milestone that strengthens Zenno’s pitch to satellite operators. Space.com detailed how the system uses superconducting magnets to interact with Earth’s magnetic field and generate torque without burning propellant, a capability that could stretch mission lifetimes and open the door to new kinds of in-space maneuvers.
What the Move Could Mean for Jobs and Manufacturing
Company leaders say shifting the corporate home to the United States positions Zenno closer to the commercial and government customers it needs in order to scale. The same Business Wire release said the firm expects to grow its U.S. headcount and is actively evaluating where and how to invest in manufacturing and testing. For now, though, Zenno has not locked in any long-term Los Angeles real estate, leaving the timing of any factory build-out an open question, L.A. Business First noted. If the company does commit to production in Southern California, local industrial landlords and aerospace engineers could see a noticeable bump in demand.
From Auckland Labs to L.A. Boardrooms
Zenno grew out of the University of Auckland’s startup ecosystem and still leans heavily on New Zealand engineering talent, according to a profile by Callaghan Innovation. The company has also been retooling its leadership in the wake of its orbital success: a June press release said Zenno added industry veteran Andrew Rush to its board, a move that signals ambitions beyond one-off demos, as reported by GlobeNewswire.
For Los Angeles, Zenno’s relocation means a rare superconducting hardware specialist is joining an already crowded aerospace neighborhood, with the potential to bring more high-skilled engineering jobs if it secures lab or factory space. The company says New Zealand will remain a core part of its technical base while it develops U.S. manufacturing and operations. Looking ahead, Space.com reports that Zenno expects to fly a larger demonstrator later this year, a key test that will help determine how aggressively the startup ramps up production in California.
