
An inmate at the Charles County Detention Center in La Plata was hospitalized Saturday night after a reported assault inside the facility left him unconscious, prompting a heavy response from correction officers and emergency crews.
At about 9:09 p.m., emergency medical services were called to the detention center at 6905 Crain Highway for an assault involving an adult inmate who had suffered a confirmed loss of consciousness, according to Southern Maryland News Net. EMS personnel consulted with an area trauma center while still on scene before loading the inmate into an ambulance for transport. The outlet reported that updates will be provided when the suspect's identity is released.

The injured inmate was transported by ambulance to the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center, according to Southern Maryland News Net. UM Capital Region identifies the hospital as a Level II trauma center, equipped to handle serious emergency injuries.
