An Oberlin man is in custody after an overnight shooting in Elyria left another man wounded near Lake Avenue early yesterday, according to police. Officers were called around 2:11 a.m. to the area of Lake Avenue and Foster Avenue, where they found a man with a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to UH Elyria Medical Center with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening. Investigators said the gunfire broke out outside a home on Rush Street after a confrontation between the suspect and the victim.
Arrest and Evidence
In a release, the Elyria Police Department said officers identified 57-year-old Daniel Armstrong of Oberlin as the suspect and detectives secured a warrant before moving in to arrest him. Armstrong was taken into custody without incident at his home at about 10 a.m. yesterday, then transported to the Lorain County Jail to await an initial appearance in Elyria Municipal Court, according to WOIO.
Police Response and Context
Detectives said they also found and seized the firearm they believe was used in the shooting. The case lands at a time when Elyria officials have been trying to clamp down on violent crime. The city launched a Neighborhood Impact Unit in October 2024 to focus on illegal guns and high-crime areas, according to the City of Elyria.
