A wild Los Angeles Police Department pursuit that kicked off in the Lake Balboa area wrapped up only after the driver finally pulled to the side of the road and all four people inside the car bolted on foot. Officers reported the vehicle topping 70 mph and, at points, barreling along the wrong side of the road before the chase ended. After a short search through nearby streets, all four occupants were taken into custody.
According to CBS Los Angeles, the driver weaved past traffic and repeatedly crossed into oncoming lanes while trying to shake officers. The outlet reports the pursuit began in the Lake Balboa neighborhood, and that officers eventually tracked down and apprehended all four suspects after they ditched the vehicle and scattered in different directions.
Why the department weighs every chase
LAPD policy requires officers to keep asking themselves, in real time, whether the risk a pursuit creates for the public is worth the push to catch a suspect. This ongoing “balance test” places heavy emphasis on supervisor oversight and the use of air units to track vehicles instead of relying solely on ground units.
As detailed by the LAPD in its vehicle pursuit analysis, the department recorded 4,203 pursuits from 2018 through 2022, and roughly 25% of them ended in collisions that caused injury or death. The largest share of those crashes happened when speeds were between 41 and 80 mph. The numbers highlight why officers and supervisors are instructed to continually reassess pursuits as conditions, traffic, and speeds change.
Lake Balboa has seen similar chases
The Lake Balboa and wider San Fernando Valley area has repeatedly turned into a backdrop for high speed chases that spill from major thoroughfares into neighborhood streets and busy commercial corridors. FOX 11 Los Angeles documented a May 2025 pursuit that ended when a driver abandoned a vehicle and sprinted into Pogo’s Bar and Grill, where officers ultimately arrested the suspect.
In the latest Lake Balboa incident, police did not immediately release the names of those arrested or specify any charges in initial reports. CBS Los Angeles reports that officers conducted a brief search of the surrounding area before making the arrests.
