Authorities say a man took a Toyota Tacoma from a car dealership, then forced his way into a nearby residence Thursday morning and opened fire, rattling the household but leaving everyone inside physically unharmed. Deputies said the man ultimately surrendered at the scene, and investigators are still working to figure out why it happened.
According to NBC4 Investigates, once inside the home the suspect demanded the family’s car and fired multiple rounds. The outlet reports the Tacoma had been taken earlier from a car dealership, although officials told reporters it was not clear whether the truck actually belonged to the lot. Deputies who responded to the scene said the man eventually came out of the house and surrendered, and that no officers or bystanders were hurt.

The episode lands in a year when Lancaster is already under a spotlight for serious law enforcement incidents. On June 20, an officer-involved shooting left one person dead, a case the California Department of Justice says it is independently reviewing under AB 1506. That earlier incident intensified scrutiny on how Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies handle violent calls in the Antelope Valley. Officials have not released further details about the stolen pickup or the home-entry shooting while detectives continue their work.
Potential Charges And Penalties
Under California law, taking a vehicle from another person by force can be prosecuted as carjacking, a felony that carries potential prison terms of three, five or nine years under California Penal Code §215. If prosecutors allege the suspect used or fired a gun during a qualifying felony, firearm enhancements under Penal Code §12022.53 could add 10 years, 20 years or even 25 years to life in state prison. Prosecutors will decide on specific charges after reviewing reports, witness statements and any evidence related to force, intent and weapon use.
Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department remained at the scene Thursday as they collected evidence and canvassed the neighborhood. Investigators are asking residents with security video or other information to contact authorities.
