A Lancaster man will spend decades behind bars after a Ventura County judge on Tuesday handed down a 46-year state prison sentence in a human trafficking and domestic violence case. Jalen Amir Yoakum, 25, was convicted in late June of human trafficking for sexual exploitation, pimping, pandering by encouragement, corporal injury to a cohabitant and dissuading a witness. Prosecutors said he zeroed in on a particularly vulnerable partner, then used violence and online advertisements to force her into commercial sex work while he profited.
According to a news release from the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, the sentence followed a June 29 jury verdict. Investigators serving search warrants recovered digital evidence, including online ads, messages and location data, that prosecutors said backed up the survivor’s account. “This sentence delivers justice for the victim and others harmed by his violence,” Senior Deputy District Attorney Rikole Kelly said in the release.
Local coverage of the proceedings detailed how Yoakum first connected with the woman on Instagram in July 2024, then gradually isolated her before coercing her into commercial sex and taking most of the money she brought in, KEYT reported. That reporting also described a January 2025 incident in which Yoakum allegedly assaulted the victim, then used her vehicle in a separate crime that ended in a high-speed pursuit and arrest.

Jurors convicted Yoakum of five felony counts, including PC 236.1(b) for human trafficking for sexual exploitation and PC 273.5(a) for corporal injury to a cohabitant. The court found several special allegations to be true, among them a prior serious felony, a strike prior and that the victim was particularly vulnerable, which together increased his potential prison exposure, according to the District Attorney’s Office. The case is listed as 2025002312 in Ventura County Superior Court, and prosecutors had argued for a state prison term at sentencing.

The 46-year sentence resolves one of Yoakum’s Ventura County cases but not all of his pending matters. Prosecutors said a years-long investigation, along with the survivor’s testimony, proved crucial in securing the conviction and lengthy sentence. They publicly commended the victim’s willingness to come forward and noted that the District Attorney’s Office included contact information for victim services with its release for anyone seeking help. With Tuesday’s ruling, Yoakum is expected to remain in state prison for decades.
