Las Vegas is starting Thursday, July 30, with clear skies, bone-dry air and temperatures around 81 degrees before the valley heats up to 111. The dangerous stretch is just getting started, with little relief expected after sunset and even hotter weather headed into the weekend.
Heat Peaks This Weekend
An Extreme Heat Warning covers Las Vegas from 10 a.m. Thursday, July 30, through 8 p.m. Sunday, August 2, according to the National Weather Service. Forecast highs reach 113 degrees Friday, July 31, and 115 degrees Saturday, August 1, and Sunday, August 2.
Temperatures remain unusually high overnight, with lows around 86 degrees Thursday night, 88 Friday night and 91 Saturday and Sunday nights. That limited cooldown is a major concern because the body gets less time to recover between hot days.
Dry, Sunny Weather Sticks Around
Rain is not part of the plan for the Las Vegas Valley through the middle of next week. The forecast stays sunny with highs of 114 degrees Monday, August 3, and Tuesday, August 4, followed by 113 degrees Wednesday, August 5.
Winds will generally stay light to moderate, running around 2 to 8 mph Thursday and Friday before reaching as high as 16 mph Sunday and Monday. Humidity will remain in the single digits during the hottest part of the day, making shade and air conditioning especially important even when the breeze picks up.
Heat Safety Takes Priority
The National Weather Service advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon and check on relatives and neighbors. The City of Las Vegas also warns that children and pets should never be left in parked vehicles, where temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
Anyone showing signs of heat exhaustion should be moved to a cool place and given water. Heat stroke is an emergency; call 911 if someone becomes confused, loses consciousness or has hot, red skin with little or no sweating.
