Thousands of Las Vegas Valley families just got a major break on preschool costs as United Way of Southern Nevada rolls out millions in new Pre-K scholarships for the coming school year.
The nonprofit says the expansion will open free, high-quality Pre-K seats at dozens of local centers and ultimately reach roughly 1,900 children across the valley. A local TV report, meanwhile, puts the immediate total at just over $13 million in scholarships covering about 1,592 seats through Nevada's state Pre-K program. For many working parents, that can mean full-day early learning without the monthly tuition shock.
What United Way Says Is Coming
In a press release, United Way of Southern Nevada said it has allocated about $15.9 million in scholarships through the Nevada Ready! State Pre-K program, selecting nearly 60 participating centers to serve roughly 1,900 children this school year.
Scholarships will be distributed through qualified centers based on recommendations and referrals, and UWSN noted that all participating sites meet the state's Quality Rating Improvement System standards. "Early education empowers children to reach their full potential and helps families thrive," UWSN President and CEO Samuel Rudd said in the release.
Local station FOX5 reported that UWSN is providing "more than $13 million" in preschool scholarships through the Nevada Ready State Pre-K program, which the station said will cover about 1,592 children at nearly 50 centers. FOX5 also directs families to United Way's early-education portal to check eligibility and complete an interest form.
Who Qualifies and How to Apply
According to United Way's early-education materials, children generally must be four years old by August 1 to qualify, and priority is given to lower-income and other underserved families. Centers allocate scholarships using recommendations and referrals.
Interested parents are asked to fill out an interest form so United Way and participating preschools can match students with open seats. For full eligibility details and the interest form, visit United Way of Southern Nevada.
Where This Fits Into Vegas Pre-K Demand
The scholarship expansion lands in the middle of a broader local push to grow preschool access. The Clark County School District opened more than 14,000 free Pre-K seats this spring, but lotteries and waitlists remain common, according to a March report that found lotteries and waitlists remain common.
At the state level, the Nevada Department of Education has built the Nevada Ready! program and published funding-history guidance that helps shape per-child allocations and how local partners administer scholarships.
United Way and participating centers are urging families to check eligibility early, before seats disappear. Parents starting the process can review eligibility materials or contact neighborhood preschools directly to ask about openings and next steps.
