A late-night shooting at Breakwater Studio Apartments in Jacksonville’s Highlands neighborhood left a man dead after he was found unconscious in the complex courtyard, police said. Officers were called to the property at 1057 Broward Road around 10 p.m. Thursday. The victim was rushed to UF Health, where emergency doctors discovered a gunshot wound to his chest and he was later pronounced dead. Detectives with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office stayed on scene into the early morning hours as the investigation continued, and no arrests had been announced.
Authorities laid out the initial timeline at a Friday morning news conference, according to Action News Jax. The station reported that the victim was taken to UF Health from the scene and later died at the hospital, while detectives were still working the courtyard and surrounding area early Friday.

Breakwater Studios is a 192-unit studio community that was converted from a motel and sold in May, according to the Jax Daily Record. The property lists on-site management and a shared courtyard among its features and sits just west of I-95 near the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens.
