A 19-year-old driver is behind bars after a late-night crash in Dallas' Pleasant Grove neighborhood that sent two children to the hospital. The collision happened around 10:57 p.m. Sunday near North St. Augustine Drive and Lake June Road, when a pickup slammed into an SUV carrying the youngsters. Dallas Fire-Rescue paramedics transported both children to a nearby hospital, though officials have not released their names or current conditions. Police arrested the driver at the scene, and he was later booked into the county jail.
According to FOX 4 Dallas‑Fort Worth, the pickup was driven by Jose Garcia, 19, who now faces a charge of driving while intoxicated. FOX 4 reports Garcia was booked at 3:07 a.m. Monday and that jail records showed bond had not been set at the time of reporting.
In a statement, the Dallas Police Department said investigators remained on scene working to piece together how the crash unfolded. Authorities asked anyone with information to contact the department's traffic unit or Crime Stoppers as detectives continue the inquiry.
Legal Context and Potential Charges
Under Texas law, simple driving while intoxicated is codified in Texas Penal Code Section 49.04 and can be charged as a misdemeanor for a first offense, carrying up to 180 days in county jail and fines. If prosecutors determine intoxication caused serious bodily injury to another person, they may file intoxication-assault charges under Section 49.07, which is a felony; intoxication-manslaughter applies if the crash results in a death. See the statute for details: Texas Penal Code.
County booking information indicates Garcia remains in custody while detectives follow leads. Per Dallas County, bond had not yet been set at the time of publication. We will update this story as officials release more information.
