A late-night outing on Lake Michigan turned deadly Sunday when a recreational boat headed in from Illinois struck a submerged breakwall near Hammond Marina and went under, killing one person and sending six others into the water, authorities said. Multiple agencies rushed to the scene, pulled the survivors from the lake and stayed on the water into the night trying to figure out how a routine trip ended in tragedy.
What Officials Say Happened
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources told ABC7 Chicago that the crash was reported at about 11:34 p.m. Sunday, when the recreational vessel hit a submerged breakwall near the entrance to the marina and sank. According to the agency, six people were rescued from the water and one person died, and no additional details were immediately released.
Authorities said the boat had been coming from Illinois before the impact. Multiple responding agencies remained on the scene as the investigation got underway, working in the dark around the marina entrance while officials began the slow process of reconstructing what took place on the lake.
Tricky Waters Around Hammond Marina
Hammond Marina sits on the city’s lakefront, shielded by rock breakwalls that shape the harbor entrances and outline traffic channels for boats. State boating rules lay out no-boat zones and shore-adjacent boundaries around the Hammond Marina breakwall, while the marina’s own materials offer maps and contact information for boaters, according to the Indiana Administrative Code and Hammond Marina.
Fishing guides also note that a secondary submerged wall sits a short distance lakeward of the main breakwall, a layout that can be hazardous for boats entering or maneuvering after dark, per Midwest Outdoors. On a calm day in full sun, it is just another quirk of the harbor. At night, it becomes one more thing for captains to worry about.
Boating Safety Reminders
The U.S. Coast Guard’s latest recreational boating report found that drowning accounted for roughly three-quarters of recreational boating deaths and that most of those victims were not wearing life jackets. The agency urges boaters to wear life jackets, avoid alcohol and check conditions before leaving the dock, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Closer to home, Indiana DNR offers boater education and safety resources for people using the state’s lakes, including online courses and vessel safety checks, per Indiana DNR.
The crash near Hammond Marina remains under investigation, and state officials have not released further information, according to ABC7 Chicago. Authorities have not yet identified the person who died and have asked anyone who witnessed the incident to contact local law enforcement or the agencies leading the response.
