Police say a late-night shooting on a Little Village sidewalk ended with a 48-year-old man in the hospital and a Chicago man facing a slate of felony charges. The victim was shot in the shoulder Tuesday night and rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was reported in good condition. According to police, the shooter sped away in an SUV but was picked up about an hour later in the nearby Douglas Park neighborhood. The investigation is still underway, and authorities have not shared many additional details.
How police say it unfolded
According to FOX 32 Chicago, the gunfire broke out around 10 p.m. in the 2900 block of West 25th Place, where 46-year-old Jose Fernandez allegedly opened fire on a man standing on the sidewalk. The victim was hit in the shoulder and taken to Mount Sinai, where police listed him in good condition.
Officers arrested Fernandez about an hour later in Douglas Park. He is facing five felony counts, including aggravated battery/discharge of a weapon, felony possession of a weapon, domestic battery and obstruction of justice, according to police.
Neighborhood context
The arrest is the latest violent episode to hit Little Village this year. The neighborhood has already seen several shootings and stabbings in recent months, including a fatal shooting reported in January by the Chicago Sun-Times. Community groups and residents have for years pushed for more patrols and stronger violence-interruption efforts during the summer, when street violence typically ticks up.
What’s next
Fernandez is scheduled to appear in court for a detention hearing on Friday. Chicago police say detectives are still working the case and have not released a motive or clarified whether Fernandez and the victim knew each other, per FOX 32 Chicago. Prosecutors will decide whether to pursue any additional charges as investigators continue gathering evidence and potential witness statements.
How to help
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact Chicago police or submit tips through the department’s anonymous tip line. Witnesses or anyone who has video or other evidence that might help the investigation are asked to reach out to detectives handling the case.
