A late-night shooting in San Diego's Logan Heights neighborhood left one person dead, according to police. A quiet residential intersection was suddenly transformed into a crime scene, drawing a large law enforcement presence that lingered into the night. Neighbors told reporters they heard several gunshots and then watched officers working in the street.
What happened
Police say a 34-year-old Hispanic man was walking on South 31st Street near Martin Avenue at about 11:56 p.m. when a car pulled up and a passenger opened fire, hitting him multiple times. Officers tried life-saving measures at the scene before paramedics took the man to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, as reported by 10News (KGTV).
Scene and witnesses
Video from the scene shows shell casings scattered near the intersection and a jacket left on the ground, while reporters noted officers going door to door in search of witnesses and surveillance footage. The station that filmed the scene said investigators moved slowly up and down the block, documenting evidence and looking for any clues. According to NBC 7 San Diego, crews stayed in the area into the morning hours.
Police response and investigation
The San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit is leading the investigation, and authorities have not released a suspect description, 10News (KGTV) reports. Detectives were seen checking nearby businesses, pulling any camera footage they could find and asking residents for cellphone video that might show the car involved or the passenger who opened fire.
Neighborhood context
Logan Heights has been hit by repeated violent incidents in recent years, and residents say public safety remains at the top of their concerns. Citywide crime data shows some violent crime categories have declined, even as every new homicide sends shock waves through the neighborhoods affected, according to the Times of San Diego.
The San Diego Police Department is asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477, per the San Diego Police Department. Detectives say even small details or brief snippets of video could help move the case forward.
