Verlena Eulalia Nesbitt, 52, of Dallas, North Carolina, died after a Tuesday evening motorcycle crash that has left a neighborhood grieving the woman many say held their family and community together. The wreck happened around 5:20 p.m. at the intersection of Lower Dallas Highway and East Main Street, when a turning car collided with the motorcycle Nesbitt was riding, leaving her with critical injuries that she did not survive. Family and neighbors described her as a devoted mother and the center of a large, close-knit family.
Crash and charges
According to a news release from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a 2017 Chevrolet Impala was turning left onto East Main Street when it struck a southbound 2024 Can-Am motorcycle. Troopers said the impact critically injured the motorcyclist, identified by family as 52-year-old Verlena Eulalia Nesbitt, who later died. The Impala's driver, identified as Sierra Lasadie Harris, sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital.
The Highway Patrol said Harris was arrested and charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, failure to yield, and careless and reckless driving. Those are the counts filed so far as investigators work to piece together exactly what happened in the seconds before the crash.
Family remembers Nesbitt
In the days after the collision, friends and relatives gathered to remember Nesbitt as the emotional anchor of a big, blended family. "She had a pure heart," Aria McClain-Houpe told the Gaston Gazette, adding that Nesbitt was "like a mom" to many neighborhood kids, not just her own.
Bryant Nesbitt, a former partner, told the paper the couple were together for 15 years and married for 12. He said Verlena had been riding for nearly 20 years, a longtime passion that preceded the crash, and that she leaves behind five children and nearly 20 grandchildren who are now trying to process a sudden loss that feels anything but real.
What the charge means
The misdemeanor death by vehicle charge in this case alleges that a violation of a traffic law, other than impaired driving, caused a person's death. As the legal process moves forward, community members have been stopping by the intersection to leave flowers and messages of support, turning the corner of Lower Dallas Highway and East Main Street into a makeshift memorial while Nesbitt's family makes funeral plans.
