Along Manor Road in East Austin, a run of late-night smash-and-grab burglaries has small businesses rattled and tallying up repair bills they never budgeted for. Staff say the prowlers have left a trail of shattered glass, emptied tip jars and disrupted shows, forcing managers to juggle schedules and shell out for emergency fixes instead of programming and payroll.

Managers at The Vortex, El Chileto and nearby spots report that suspects have broken through glass to get inside, rifled through multiple areas of the businesses and may have taken cash from a bartender tip cabinet and a donation jar. Austin Police Department detectives are investigating recent incidents at El Chileto and at the shared property that houses Vic and Al's and Dai Due, but no suspects have been publicly identified, according to KXAN.

Melissa McKnight, who helps run The Vortex, told KXAN that "this place is my artistic home," and called the break-in "a violation" that "trashes a safe space." Managers say that reinforcing doors and replacing broken glass panels has already cost thousands of dollars, stretching already-tight small business budgets.

APD Investigation And How To Report

The Austin Police Department's Commercial Burglary Unit is asking for public help in a series of commercial break-ins and has circulated suspect descriptions and surveillance images in other, possibly related, cases. In a recent release about multiple ATM thefts, detectives detailed suspects using power tools and urged anyone with information to email [email protected] or contact Capital Area Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477, according to the City of Austin.

History On Manor Road

This stretch of Manor Road has been on burglars' radar before. In 2024, APD asked for help identifying a so-called serial commercial burglar who appeared in surveillance footage during multiple break-ins along the corridor. That earlier investigation underscored how long the problem has lingered and how it continues to frustrate small business owners, as reported by FOX 7 Austin.

How Owners Are Responding

Business owners say they are upgrading to stronger doors, installing new locks, expanding camera coverage, keeping less cash on site and tweaking operations to cut down on overnight exposure. APD is urging businesses to report every theft and burglary so investigators can review footage and connect cases; tips can be submitted through the same channels listed above, according to the City of Austin.

For now, performers and staff along Manor Road say they plan to keep the doors open, stages lit and kitchens running, even as they keep a closer eye on the block and hope a solid tip or clearer video finally leads detectives to an arrest. Anyone with information about the recent break-ins is asked to contact APD's Commercial Burglary Unit or Capital Area Crime Stoppers.
