The ceremonial groundbreaking took place Wednesday, July 28, with MCW leaders and development partners gathering at the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center site to mark the start of construction. The complex is scheduled to open to students in spring 2028, a significant change for a school that has historically operated without campus residences.
According to the Milwaukee Business Journal, the July 28 ceremony also served as the public rollout of the Trailmark at MCW name. School officials used the event to highlight how the housing project is expected to influence campus life and student recruitment as construction advances, with community and campus stakeholders on hand for the symbolic turning of soil.
Why MCW Is Building Student Housing
MCW is pitching Trailmark as more than just a place to sleep. The project is framed as a tool to strengthen campus life, support recruitment and reduce parking and traffic pressures around the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center. The school’s Spring 2026 magazine notes that the effort "aims to enhance the campus environment" and ties the housing plan to goals around recruitment, engagement and fiscal sustainability, according to MCW Magazine. Site, Earlier Plans And The Timeline
Before the Trailmark branding, early renderings labeled the development as "The Commons at MCW" on a college-owned site at 8701 Watertown Plank Road within the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center campus. Those images surfaced in December 2025 coverage by the Milwaukee Business Journal. With the ceremonial groundbreaking complete, the project now moves into site work and foundation phases as MCW aims to welcome its first student residents in spring 2028.
Construction milestones, city approvals and permits are expected to shape the coming year of work, with MCW and local media set to track the project’s progress toward the planned 2028 opening. For students who have traditionally relied on off-campus rentals, the new building will represent the first housing option owned or managed directly on MCW property.
