Metro Detroit voters who rely on public transportation can leave their fare cards at home next Tuesday. SMART and DDOT are making rides free across the region for the entire day, turning the trip to the polls into one less expense.
SMART will provide fare-free service across Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties, while DDOT will waive fares on its routes within Detroit, according to the Michigan Chronicle. The offer runs from midnight through 11:59 p.m., and riders will not need a fare, pass, or ticket.
The deal covers more than regular bus routes. Fixed-route buses, SMART Connector, ADA paratransit, and SMART Flex will all be included, although riders using Connector or paratransit still need to make their reservations ahead of time.
Free rides arrive as transit lands on the ballot
Tuesday is Michigan’s August primary, with early in-person voting available through next Sunday. Voters who wait for Election Day will have a fare-free option whether they are commuting, attending an appointment, or heading to a polling place.
There is also a transit issue on the ballot itself. Wayne County voters will consider a public transportation funding question that could support SMART, DDOT, and other regional providers, as outlined by an earlier Michigan Chronicle explainer.
The free-ride plan continues a recent Election Day practice in Southeast Michigan. SMART and DDOT also offered free service during last year’s municipal election, a partnership documented by ClickOnDetroit.
