A busy Capitol Hill crossroads turned into a crime scene Thursday morning after police found an adult woman stabbed at the intersection of 8th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue SE, just steps from Eastern Market. Officers arrested a suspect at the scene and recovered a knife, authorities said. The woman was conscious and breathing when first responders arrived and was taken to a hospital by DC Fire and EMS. Investigators had not released the suspect’s identity or a possible motive.
According to WJLA, First District officers were called to the corner just before 11 a.m., where they located the injured woman. DC Fire and EMS transported her to a hospital, and police made the arrest without incident, the outlet reports. Investigators did not immediately identify the person taken into custody.

The intersection sits at Eastern Market Metro Park, a transit plaza centered on the Eastern Market Metro entrance that draws shoppers and commuters, according to a public-life study by the DC Office of Planning. The study notes the plaza sees an abundance of pedestrian and transit activity during weekday commuting hours.

The corner falls inside the Metropolitan Police Department’s First District, which patrols Capitol Hill and surrounding neighborhoods. MPD has previously publicized arrests tied to violent incidents on 8th Street, according to a Metropolitan Police Department news release.
